How wonderful. At that price, they will remain his, and his wife will still be pissed!
These are getting really expensive. Luckily not everyone is asking these kind of prices these days. His BIN is a few hundred more than what I paid for my two pair of 19's combined! (and his aren't even mint) His youtube video of the speakers playing is a much better audio recording than many videos I've heard that "audition" speakers. He plugged his microphone directly into his P.C. and didn't use a cheap condenser built in mic. on a camcorder or worse yet--a cell phone. Not a great recording, but better audio than most of this type that I've heard. Video quality is pretty lame--and a lot of his pics are dark/poor quality. He did know enough to have the woofers reconed/remagged at GPA so I give him credit for that. He has them hooked up to a McIntosh MC 275 and says he has two more pair in his TV room---obviously a man of discriminating taste!

Enjoying Altec Speakers since 1972
There still are pairs at 1200-1400. For that I'd just keep looking. I have found no matter how high the price someone is always willing to charge it.![]()
Your neighbors called. They like your music.
Absolutely beautiful!!!! yep that video was absolutely beautiful sounding.... If he see's that price I'll say what I always say, There's one born every minute.
You need to put into perspective compared to new speaker prices. $2600 for the pair is the same cost as two pair of brand new Bose 901's ($1300) and which do you think will sound twice as nice?

I listened to the video I might be wrong but it sounds like a bit of cross over fatigue. The mids are to high .
It is a relatively good audio recording compared to most videos of this type so I can see how you might think that. On my speakers here it does sound like a pretty good microphone recording as compared to many other videos of this type. Also, it's mono which makes sense because he says he plugged his microphone (singular) directly into his p.c.--so he's using one microphone to record a stereo source/stereo system. If it was straight off the CD it would almost always be stereo as it sounds like a relatively modern recording. Of course, there's no way to know with absolute certainty how the recording was made....
It has been my experience that whenever you put a microphone in front of a live band (or stereo system etc.) to get an "audience recording" that the resulting (direct, un-equalized) recording is usually kind of "midrangey" sounding for a variety of reasons including the fact that most microphones are not flat from 20-20,000 hz (they generally have somewhat of a rolled off response unless you're talking a VERY expensive microphone and even then due to placement etc. there are still issues with this type of recording setup). Not to mention you're kind of "chasing rainbows" trying to do any kind of critical evaluation of the sound of speakers or their crossovers with this type of video as your computer speakers are a real "bottleneck" (and the microphone is a bottleneck too as it adds it's own character to the recording). Even an ideally mic.d recording with high quality microphones will sound like your computer speakers and also be affected by (have some character from) the microphones used so trying to evaluate crossover fatigue on the speakers in the video by listening to them over your computer speakers is an iffy proposition at best. I still enjoy this kind of recording because it can sometimes, in a very rough/general way, give you some kind of idea of the character of the source speakers if you listen with high quality speakers or a nice pair of headphones plugged into your P.C. but you're still largely hearing the sound of your speakers/headphones and the mic. used. Basically, trying to do any kind of critical evaluation of speakers or their crossovers by listening to them through other speakers (and the mic. that was used) is not a good idea IMHO even though you sometimes feel you can tell something from this type of recording in a very general way....

Oh, I just saw who the seller is. He is another one that has overpriced listings and wonders why things don't move.
Watching Altec prices on eBay as closely as I have done for the past 5 years, you get a feel for things. And a list of sellers, good and bad.
